The provisional accreditation is an assurance that Al Shirawi FM has appropriately qualified personnel in the organisation, robust financial status and is qualified to deliver energy saving projects for both public and private sector clients in Dubai.

The ESCO Accreditation is the latest for Al Shirawi FM, which already has a host of other international certifications from reputed agencies including BISCs, CSP Standard, ISSA, U.S Green Building Council and BSI for ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

The RSB Chairman H.E. Ali Al Owais presented the ESCO certificate to Navin Valrani, CEO, Al Shirawi FM, and Evie Boustantzi, General Manager, Al Shirawi FM at an accreditation ceremony held earlier this year.

Navin Valrani said: “At Al Shirawi, we are passionate about the UAE’s vision to become a smart and sustainable place and its economic potential for prosperity. The ESCO accreditation was a natural step for us to take as it is the path to tread for industry players who are committed to the vision.”

“As an ESCO, we bring together a wealth of experience through our long and diverse experience in construction and maintenance, by capitalising on in-house synergies and knowledge. This gives our clients added confidence and encourage them to make energy management a key focus of their facilities operations with Al Shirawi FM as their long term partner,” added Evie Boustantzi.

Al Shirawi employees turn up in large numbers to volunteer at Blood Donation Camp
Blood Donation Camp | Al Shirawi

Dubai, United Arab Emirates: The Engineering Services Group of Al Shirawi, in collaboration with Dubai Blood Donation Center (DBDC) of the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), held a Blood Donation Camp on 24th November 2015, at the Ras Al Khor facility in Dubai.

The Blood Donation Camp attracted employees from diverse departments of the Group. Over 128 Al Shirawi employees generously donated blood and demonstrated their support for the cause with their selfless volunteering.

The Corporate Social Responsibility activity initiated by the Human Resources Department of Al Shirawi, aimed at spreading awareness about the importance of blood donation. The blood donated at the event could save the lives of terminally ill patients and meet the transfusion needs of people following road accidents, surgery or complications related to pregnancy and childbirth.

Dr. Zakir Malik, Corporate Manager - Human Resources commented, “There is an increasing need for blood for medical emergency cases in the UAE. At Al Shirawi, we strive to instill an attitude of generosity among our employees. It is important that we play a role in the health of fellow UAE residents and help with safe supply of blood.”

Blood collected by the Dubai Blood Donation Center (DBDC) accounts for 50% of the total blood collected in the UAE. DBDC is the only blood supplier in Dubai. Its services extend to Thalassemia patients, road accident and burn victims, patients with neonates and maternity health complications, cases diagnosed with cancer or scheduled for open heart operations as well as to all private health facilities within Dubai that are entitled for transfusion services.

The growing population in the UAE has resulted in greater demand for healthcare facilities and supply of blood. Organization employees donating blood could significantly contribute to increasing blood donation requirements, especially during seasonal shortages.

The Blood Donation Camp is among the few CSR initiatives taken by Al Shirawi this year. Previous activities include a Clean-Up Drive, Diabetes Day and Pink Day in support of breast cancer awareness.

Al Shirawi organizes Pink Day in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is observed worldwide as the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To educate its employees on the occasion and to do its bit for the cause, Al Shirawi organized Pink Day in its Ras Al Khor facility recently.

An awareness program was arranged where Dr. Pranay Taori, a veteran in the field of Medical Oncology from Zulekha Hospital, Dubai was invited to share his knowledge and information about breast cancer, its causes, symptoms, prevention, diagnosed outcomes of negligence and treatment options available. The employees were encouraged to participate in the program and raise their concerns directly to the medical expert. Navin Valrani, CEO of the Al Shirawi Engineering Services Group (ESG) and Zakir Malik, Corporate Manager – Human Resources for the ESG were also present on the occasion.

To mark its support for the cause, the company encouraged everyone to wear pink on the day of the occasion and donate AED 5/- by buying a piece of pink ribbons each. The collected funds were sent to support the cause.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual campaign run worldwide to raise awareness about the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the necessary steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. Dedicating a month in a year towards the cause is a small yet effective way to move gradually towards progress.

Al Shirawi FM launches mobile phone recycling campaign
Al Shirawi FM celebrates Earth Hour 2013

Al Shirawi FM has joined hands with Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) to recycle used and unusable cell phones including all accessories to help deal with the problem of unwanted digital waste.

Volunteers from EEG held an impressive presentation where attendees were educated on the uses of electronic recycling. Facts and figures were also shared that annually only less than 3% of the mobile devices are recycled. The circuit boards of these phones contain electrical transformers, plastic and metal components and harmful chemicals such as arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium, copper and other metals.

These harmful metals may also cause contamination of soil, groundwater and penetrate the food chain. Some of the precious metals such as gold and silver are used in the circuit boards of phones and computers, are recoverable only through e-waste recycling. Recycling reduces extraction and depletion of raw materials contributing to the preservation of environment.

For this purpose, EEG has placed specialized drop bins in Ras Al Khor and Al Quoz campuses, where used and unusable phones along with chargers and other mobile phone accessories can be disposed of in a safe and ecofriendly manner.

Speaking for the event, Mr.Lakshminarayanan, Division Manager for Al Shirawi FM said "Al Shirawi Group as an organization aims to be at the forefront of corporate environmental leadership and has been taking immense steps to lead and do more in the coming years. 12th December 2010 marked yet another milestone for Al Shirawi and Leminar.

Members from Al Shirawi and Leminar along with an estimated 2,000 volunteers from all sectors in the UAE, participated in the Clean Up – UAE Campaign organized by the Emirates Environmental Group. Trudging through the sand where camel pens once stood in Nad Al Sheba, volunteers filled rubbish bags with nearly 35 tons of trash was from the area. It was a satisfying, fun, productive way of giving importance to our environment and absolutely a great learning experience for community service.

Al Shirawi and Leminar are committed to make a visible effort to reduce and recycle waste. A lot of green initiatives have been taken not only in the facility but also the staff and labor accommodations.

World FM Day Highlights Facility Management's Global Contributions
World FM Day

The first ever World FM Day is scheduled for 28th August, 2009. Facility Management (FM) associations around the world will be celebrating this event in their respective countries by promoting recognition of the contribution that facility management makes to the workplace and home alike. Some FM associations are staging public events to bring attention to the important role facility management plays, not only in the business world but also in ensuring environmental sustainability and building life cycle costs are managed effectively.

With businesses and high-rise residents increasingly occupying complex, technology-dependant buildings, facing greater cost pressures and responding to calls for better stewardship of the Earth’s resources, professional facility management has emerged as the best way to establish adaptability, flexibility and sustainability within the built environment. World FM Day will highlight facility management’s role as a critical, strategic business discipline that makes real contributions to an organisation’s overall success.

World FM Day activities will include governmental partnerships, networking events, award presentations, luncheons, video presentations, social media campaigns and more, all with the goal of raising the profile of the facility management profession worldwide

"I am pleased to see the first-ever World FM day taking shape" said Global FM Chairman Steve Gladwin. "Each local event will enable our members to demonstrate the objectives and progress of facility management and how critical it is as a strategic business discipline. Moreover, we will be able to showcase the ideals of facility management, not only within the profession and industry, but also to governments and the general public."

"Lionel Prodgers created one of the first FM companies in 1984 and has been involved in several major FM business deals. He was BIFM chairman from 1997 to 1999, chairman of EuroFM from 2000 to 2005 and a board director of IFMA from 2006 until 2008.The biggest challenge for FMs, says Lionel, is “understanding that buildings as assets are now only a part of their responsibility. Because businesses have social responsibilities, FMs must ensure these are met and that takes them way outside the confines of the building”.

"To learn more about the impact of the plans for the 28th August, try Googling World FM Day or BIFM’s website for further details as to how FM companies, including Al Shirawi FM, are developing as a leading service providers in a challenged property market.

Al Shirawi awarded for Transport Safety

RTA Award functionH.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, presented Al Shirawi Engineering Services’ CEO, Navin Valrani, with the Roads and Transport Authority Award for Sustainable Transport in a glittering ceremony at the Monarch Hotel in Dubai. Al Shirawi Engineering Service Group (ESG) was awarded the 2nd winner prize in the Transport Safety Category.

In order to establish, implement and maintain a system that continuously works to enhance road and transport safety, Al Shirawi Engineering Services Group (ESG) deputed a team of professionals to develop an organisational level campaign called “BEST“ (Better Environment and Safer Transportation System )

When RTA announced transport safety campaign in the second quarter of the year 2008, a steering committee was formed at to get the programme benchmarked with regional best practises.

The objective behind the core group formulation was to work continuously and improve commercial vehicle efficiency, performance level with investment in state of art technology, training, measurement and monitoring accidents and incidents and to reduce them with targets .The implementation process was kicked off with the help of a well defined commercial transport management system procedure generated to give directions to the campaign.

The campaign title “Better Environment and Safer Transportation System” was chosen taking into account the organisational commitment to build an accident free Dubai through improvement of safety standards adopted by commercial vehicles.

Since joining Al Shirawi as the Manager of A+ Environmental Cleaners in May 2003, Roger de Beaufort has seen the company grow from a young upstart into one of the UAE's leading cleaning organisations. "When I came to A+ Environmental Cleaners the company was in its infancy. As with any new company, there was very little in the way of equipment, processes and training. We've gone from that to now being an ISO certified company," Roger says.

Roger has extensive experience in project management and is passionate about his involvement in the cleaning world. It hasn't taken him long to develop strong opinions about what the industry needs.

He is one of the leading proponents for the establishment of a set of legislated guidelines for cleaning companies operating in the Emirates.

Currently there is no standard procedure in Dubai for cleaning water tanks and this is something Roger believes needs to be changed. "I've been working hard towards getting legislation in process and Dubai Municipality is getting close to finalising on a set of standards," Roger says.

When not working, Roger enjoys an active lifestyle and can often be found playing rugby, cycling, running or swimming.

Eye glass project sees great results
Eye ClinicWhat do you notice when you look at the buses carrying construction workers around the streets of Dubai? Jamie Phares noticed that virtually none of the workers wore eye glasses. Jamie raised the subject with her friend, Navin Valrani, and asked him why this was. Do construction workers have unusually good eyesight? Or was there some other reason? This conversation laid the foundations for the Eye Glass Project, which was to become a major charitable initiative driven by Al Shirawi Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. Jamie Phares happens to work with Johnson & Johnson, one of the world’s leading sight specialists, supplying vision correction technology to opticians throughout the region. Navin Valrani was impressed with her concerns, and recognized immediately that proper eye care and correct vision are vital for the welfare of all company employees. The problem was that many workers did not have access to qualified and professional eye care. So, a company-wide initiative was implemented to ensure that all workers had access to proper sight testing and vision correction. The company teamed up with Al Jaber Optical to offer all workers free eye testing, and also arranged with Johnson & Johnson to provide spectacles to those who needed them at a heavily
Eye Testing
subsidized rate. It began with a Notice posted in April 2006 inviting workers to come for a free eye test. That first notice brought 69 enquiries, and resulted in 69 pairs of spectacles being issued! Subsequent rounds have seen a further 200 applicants, of which 173 now have glasses and better vision. The program was an immediate success, and so far more than 250 workers have been enabled to see properly, many of them for the first time! The program is ongoing, and when every member of current workforce has taken up the opportunity, it will be offered to all new recruits as well. Employee welfare is a one of the cornerstones of all Al Shirawi group businesses, and the company’s initiative was prominently featured in 7Days.
Celebrating a Birthday every month

What started as a surprise birthday party for the boss has turned into a monthly celebration for the staff at Al Shirawi. Each month, the entire company is invited to a party to celebrate with the staff who have had a birthday that month. "The idea came about in July when we held a surprise party for Navin Valrani, our Executive Director", said Human Resources Manager Ashfaq Kazi.

"Staff don't' usually get an opportunity to meet each other outside the scope of their official work. We decided it would be a nice idea to celebrate the birthdays that take place each month and invite everyone to join the fun."

Each month, Ashfaq sends out an email, inviting staff to meet in the company dining room on the last Wednesday or Thursday of the month. The party starts an hour before the office closes, so the impact on work is minimal.

"We decorate the dining room and provide a cake that is cut by the birthday celebrants, who also receive a card, flowers, and a gift voucher. We provide refreshments and snacks for everyone else," said Ashfaq. "Everyone comes, including the department managers and Mr. Navin.”

"The gatherings are a great opportunity for staff from all eight companies to meet each other in an informal setting, as well as to meet the senior managers."

Customer service guaranteed

PoojaAl Shirawi Electrical and Mechanical Engineering has enhanced its commitment to customer satisfaction for its After Sales Service business with the recent creation of a customer service department. Managed by Pooja Rangwani, the customer service desk was established in December 2003 and monitors and responds to all customer feedback received for its service business be it positive or negative. Feedback is passed directly to the Executive Director, Which ensures all customer comments are heard at the top level of the company and acted upon immediately.

"Customers are free to tell me any small details," Pooja explained.

"Through the Customer Service Desk we can know how satisfied our customers really are and how we can improve our services for them."

Once maintenance is completed Pooja analyses the job report and contacts the customer directly to get feedback on the work done and overall performance of Al Shirawi. She also notifies customers when the next maintenance on their air conditioning system is due.

So far the customer feedback has been predominantly good, according to Pooja, however it hasn't all been positive.
"No-one's perfect, although we are striving to be," Pooja said.
As part of the dedication to customer service, all technicians now undergo a new training programme, given by supervisors, to teach them how to better deal with such things as maintenance work, technical details and interaction with customers.

Customers who wish to contact Pooja Rangwani at the customer service desk can email her at customercare@alshirawi.ae or call 04-3338700.
